About Smudges
and Smudging
Smudge Sticks or Bundles are
all-natural ceremonial incense traditionally burned in
Native American rituals. Today, doctors, therapists, and
body workers are discovering the beneficial aspects of
these herbs. Smudge Bundles are one of the means by which
people around the globe are reconnecting with the power
of Mother Nature.
The smudge smoke is made either by
spreading dry herbs on hot coals or hot rocks or igniting
dry herbs in a clay bowl or shell.
It is traditionally used in ceremonies
and included in medicine pouches and bundles. Sage
is burned in smudging ceremonies to drive out bad
spirits, feelings or influences. The leaves are
valued for their aromatic properties and are used as a
natural moth repellent. Sage can be used in
numerous ways. Native Americans of the Plains
Nations cover the floor of their sweat lodges with sage.
They will also breathe through a small bundle of sage and
at times rub the bundle on their bodies while in the
sweat lodge.
"Sage makes the bad spirits
sick. They go away from it when it is burned.
It does not make the good spirits sick. They will
not leave when it is smoked. Sweet grass is
pleasant to all the spirits. Good spirits like
it. Bad spirits like it. All like it.
The smoke of sweet grass is pleasant to the good
spirits. They come to the smoke. They are
pleased with one who makes this smoke. They will
listen to what such a one asks. But the bad spirits
come also to enjoy the smoke. So, sage must be
burned to make them sick. Then, sweet grass to
bring good spirits."
Traditional stories and myths tell of
the power of sage in that wherever sage is present
negative forces cannot enter. In the Inipi
ceremony, a sprig of sage is worn behind the right ear to
protect the participant and placate the little
people.

Pinon Pine Needles 1
oz
|
The pinon pine tree of New
Mexico. Pinon pine needles were widely used by
Native Americans, particularly during ceremonial
purposes. When burned on hot coals in sweat
lodge sessions, they release a purifying scent.
These pine needles have a distinctive clean and
sweet smell. The scent can refresh the body,
mind and spirit, clear the head and aid the
release of a bleak outlook.

Red Willow Bark 1
oz
|
Regarded
by Native Americans as being relatives of the
four winds, as seeds are carried in four
directions. Hopi and Navajo clans used willow to
make prayer sticks and amulets, whilst others
used the plant to make water carriers, arrow
shafts or emblems of the four winds.
An important ingredient in
sacred smoking ceremonies. It's calming and
soothing, with clearing purposes and during
quiet sessions of meditation.
Our red willow (as do most of
our ceremonial herbs) comes from a network of
Native American wildcrafters from Canada to
South America who collect plants in an
ecological and respectful way. Wildcrafting is a
term which means that the herbs and plants are
collected in such a way that the source is
sustainable. For example this means not pulling
up root systems, harvesting just enough so that
the plant will continue to thrive and generally
caring for each plant source. Because of the
scarcity of some of the traditional Native
American herbs and plants we feel this attitude
to be absolutely essential as some companies are
actually damaging the environment because they
are putting profit first.
